Silas Steele was born in Rush county, Indiana, on December 3rd, 1848. He died at his home in Sutherland, on June 10th, 1926, having attained the age of 77 years, 6 months and 13 days.

When quite young he moved with his parents to Illinois, and later to Jefferson county, Iowa, where he married Rebecca Bartels. He farmed there one year, and in the fall of 1870, he came to O'Brien county and took up a homestead, built on it, and went back to Jefferson county to harvest his crops.

On February 14th the following year, he loaded all his possessions upon a covered wagon, and together with his wife and five weeks old son, started again for O'Brien county. Upon their arrival they took up residence on his farm. There they lived and raised their family until seven years ago, when they built their city home and took up residence there.

Six children were born to them William Henry, their eldest, preceded his father in death, causing the first break in the family circle, on April 17th, 1925. The other five children together with their mother were present when Mr. Steele died.

The surviving family are his widow, Rebecca; Mrs. Alma Lehan and Ira Steele of Sioux City, Iowa; Mrs. Sylvia Scott of Lucedale, Mississippi; Mrs. Cora Nelson and Frank Steele of Sutherland. Two sisters and one brother also survive him, as do twenty-four grandchildren, and thirteen great grandchildren.

Mr. Steele united with the Christian Church when nineteen years of age, but later when his father's family joined the Baptist church he removed his membership to that body of the followers of Christ.

Silas Steele was a hard-working, honest, truthful, upright man. He was a credit to his community. He had a fine sense of justice to others as well as to himself. He was a kind and loving husband and father. His family always felt his protecting love and appreciated his self-sacrificing spirit expressed toward them. They know their loss is heavy indeed. His passing was so peaceful, so like a child falling asleep, that the immediate family can hardly realize he has really gone.

The funeral was held Saturday afternoon at two-thirty o'clock at the M.E. church, Rev. Thos. Batho having charge of the services. Interment was made in the Waterman cemetery.
