Dick, 79, of Southern Pines, died at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital.

Mr. Smith was born to the late Tallie W. and Blanche Lamb Smith.
After graduating from Burlington High School in 1942, he entered into the U.S. Navy until 1946. After serving his country, he graduated from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill in 1950 with a bachelor's degree in sociology. He was a member of the UNC Men's Glee Club, Playmaker's Theater, and Phi Mu Alpha musical fraternity.

Mr. Smith's professional career included working with the Greensboro YMCA, Western Electric, Towel City Towel Company where he owned stores in Greensboro and Southern Pines. He also worked in real estate and auto sales and after retirement worked with The Pit Golf Links and The Bluffs.

Mr. Smith was a former member of First Lutheran Church of Greensboro and a member of Our Saviour Lutheran Church since 1967, where he was a member of the choir and served as choir director from 1967 until 1992. He also served on the church council.

Mr. Smith was a member of the Southern Pines Rotary Club and served as past president, Toastmasters International, Southern Pines Elks Lodge (serving as past Exalted Ruler), Boy Scouts of America (serving as a former Scoutmaster), and Greensboro Civitans.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy McKinley Smith, whom he married on June 3, 1950; his daughter, Melinda Smith Ransdell and her husband, Johnny, of Aberdeen; three grandchildren, Douglas, Joey and Tommy; and a niece, Rebecca Lostan, of Warren, N.J.
