A PIONEER OF BROWN COUNTY
MRS. MARY T. RAVENSCROFT LAID TO REST AT HER HOME IN VERSAILLES
Mrs. Mary F. Ravenscroft, who was taken with a fainting spell on February 28th, died at her residence in Versailles on Tuesday, March 26th, and was laid to rest beside the body of her husband, Ashford D. Ravenscroft, in the Versailles new cemetery Thursday. Mrs. Ravenscroft was born near Versailles, Woodford county, Kentucky, November 17th, 1824. Her father, Henry Casteen, was a Virginian by birth, who early went to Kentucky, and in 1832 came to Illinois and located in Brown county. He, with Col. Vandeveter, Dr. Vandeveter and A.D. Ravenscroft, were the four trustees who located and started the present town site, naming it after Casteen's old home town of Versailles, Kentucky.
Mary F. Casteen was married to A.D. Ravenscroft on the 21st of November, 1841. Mr. Ravenscroft came to Versailles from Romney, Hampshire county, Virginia, in 1826. Being a man of unusual perseverance, energy and ambition, coupled with shrewdness and great intellectual powers, he carried through with success almost every business venture he undertook. While helping push this town site he entered the general mercantile business, purchasing farm lands as the opportunity offered and continued doing business along these lines until his death, April 19th, 1872, leaving a fortune, which at that time was second to none in the country. At his death the management and supervision of the larger portion of this estate fell on Mrs. Ravenscroft, who for the past thirty-five years has given it her personal attention.
Mrs. Ravenscroft was a diligent reader and a great student of the Bible and ancient history, and up to the time of her death was considered by those who knew her best as an authority on the above works. From her earliest girlhood she was a true, conscientious, faithful Christian and member of the M.E. church. Cheerful and sociable, with a kind work for everybody, her numerous friends and acquaintances in this part of the state will sincerely mourn her loss.
Of her five children, three are still living -- William H. Ravenscroft, and Mrs. Thomas H. Graves, of Versailles, Ill., and Mrs. William H. Yates, of Griggsville, Ill. Also one sister and half brother, Miss Martha Casteen, of
