Emmett's parents were Ann Augusta "Annie" WEBB and her first husband, the noted writer, editor and clergyman, the Rev. Henry Whitney CLEVELAND (1836-1907). Emmett is believed to have been named for Henry's older sister, Emma CLEVELAND WOOD (1823-1907).

The following obituary appeared in the Friday, 25 Dec 1908 edition of The Hartwell Sun. The mention of Emmett in his mother's obituary (shown below) and the inscription on his gravestone as recorded in the 1937 DAR survey, are the only records we have of Emmett, thus far.

[Note that the death year on Annie's gravestone incorrectly shows 1909 whereas multiple obituaries showed her death to have occurred in 1908.]

DEAD
Mrs. Annie A. Cleveland died in Washington, D. C., December 16, at 4 p.m., and her remains were brought to Hartwell on the 18th for interment. On the 19th funeral services were held at "The Oaks," led by Drs. Kelley and Galphin in the presence of many sorrowing friends and relatives. The body was accompanied from Washington to Hartwell by Mr. J. M. Webb and wife, at whose home the deceased passed away. The body was interred in the Hartwell cemetery by the side of her little son, Emmett, who departed this life fifty years ago. It was a sad but tender sight to see six of her nephews acting as pall-bearers and tenderly carrying the precious burden. Mrs. Annie A. Cleveland was a daughter of Judge Clayton Webb, and wife of Henry Cleveland, an attorney at law of the days ante-bellum.

[Note that in Jul 1857 at the time of Micajah Adolphus CLARK's visit to his uncle (his mother's brother), Clayton Stribling WEBB, in CLARK's detailed diary, there was no mention that Henry and Annie had any children or that Annie was visibly expecting. From that, the reference to "fifty years ago," in his mother's obit, and the "aged 12 months" inscription on his gravestone, Emmett was probably born in Dec 1857 and died in Dec 1858.

Note also that in his diary, CLARK identified Annie as Ann Augusta CLEAVELAND (s/b CLEVELAND). In her obit, her name is shown as Mrs. Annie A. Cleveland. From these sources, it seems clear that her middle name was Augusta. The only source found thus far for the name "Eliza" is the possibly erroneous recording/transcription of her name as "Eliza Ann" from the record of her 13 Nov 1856 marriage in Hart County, Georgia to Henry CLEVELAND]

Kudos and thanks to Brenda Harbin for finding Annie's obituary from which the memory of Emmett has now been preserved through this memorial which is now connected to his Mom's memorial. And, kudos and thanks to Brenda for taking the photo of Emmet's small burial vault in front of, and to the left of, his Mom's gravestone.

Also, Kudos and thanks to contributor Bobbie O'Barr for finding and providing the inscription information from the 1937 cemetery survey.

Blessed are the children who died young.
