“A quiet home wedding took place at the residence of E. F. Root at eight o’clock on Wednesday evening. The contracting parties were Mr. and Mrs. Root’s only daughter, Myrtie [sic] L. Root, and Mr. Edwin M. Strayer, a well known young Bolivar Business man. The ceremony was pronounced by Rev. S. W. Arnold pastor of the M. E. church, in the present of the family and a few close friends. After hearty congratulations had been indulged in, the assembled company sat down to a sumptuous spread, to which as is ever the case, ‘they did ample justice.’ After a brief visit in Buffalo and vicinity, Mr. and Mrs. Strayer will return to Bolivar and begin housekeeping in the E. L. Dodd residence on Friendship street. The bride and groom are both well known and highly esteemed young people and have the best wishes of many friends for a happy wedded life.”

Former Supervisor Marries Former Bolivar Teacher at North Rose, N. Y.
Announcement is made of the marriage of E. M. Strayer, a former member of the Allegany county board of Supervisors to Mrs. Irene Stebbins, a former first grade teacher in Bolivar. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Mr. Abrahamer at the bride’s home at North Rose, N. Y., December 18. Among those in attendance were Mr. Strayer’s sisters, Mrs. Murray Bascom of Bolivar and Mrs. John Fay of Wellsville.
Mr. and Mrs. Strayer arrived in Bolivar Sunday evening, after a wedding trip to Harrisburg and Washington. They are occupying the Strayer home on Friendship street in this village where he is employed by M. C. Bascom & company. The many friends of the couple extend to them heartiest congratulations and best wishes.”

“Last Rites Held for E. M. Strayer
Funeral services for Edwin M. Strayer, resident of Bolivar for the past 59 years, were held at the home of his sister, Mrs. DeEtta Bascom on Boss street Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock. The Rev. Arthur Partington, pastor of the Bolivar Methodist church, officiated and the burial was made in Maple Lawn cemetery. Earl Brown, Albert Weimer, Melvin Ingalls, Reuben Elliott, Erwin Elliott, Melvin Gowdy, Henry Hanks and Dell Smith, employees of M. C. Bascom & Co., where he had been employed for the past 18 years, acted as pall bearers.
Mr. Strayer, who had been in ill health for four months, died Friday morning in the Olean General hospital, following an operation, the second he had undergone within a six weeks’ period.
He is survived by one sister, Mrs. DeEtta Bascom of Bolivar, with whom he had made his home for several years, an aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Bert Trace of Meadville, Pa., and the following nephews and nieces also survive: Howard Fay, Scio; Mrs. Edith McAhon, Cecil Fay, Wellsville; and Mrs. Helen Briggs, Genesee, Pa. Another sister, Mrs. Hattie Strayer Fay died in 1934.
Edwin M. Strayer was born in Geneva, Pa., March 13, 1868, a son of Lorenzo and Lucy Tarce [sic] Strayer. He moved to Bolivar when he was 12 years old, where he had resided since. Beginning his career as a tooldresser and driller, Mr. Strayer remained in the oil business until his marriage to Miss Myrtie Root, who passed away in 1914. At that time he opened an [sic] harness shop in one side of the State Bank Building. He continued in that line, moving into the building now occupied by the Matylas Billiard Room when the Bank expanded into the whole building, until 1918 when he was forced to give up this confining work because of ill health. In 1928 Mr. Strayer was married again to Mrs. Irene Weed, who passed away in 1932.
Mr. Strayer served at Town Clerk from January 1916 to September, 1919 when he took over the post of supervisor, vacated by A. J. Maston, who had been called to war. Mr. Strayer held that position until December 31, 1923.
Mr. Strayer was a charter member of the Bolivar I.O.O.F. and a member and director of the Methodist church.
Among those attending the services were John Fay, Miss Mildred Fay, Mrs. Clinton McAhon and sons, Jack and Allen of Wellsville, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Fay and daughters, Katherine and Phillis [sic] of Scio, Mr. and Mrs. W. Cecil Fay, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Harder and daughter, Aliene [sic] Fay of Wellsville, Mr. and Mrs. Olin Briggs of Genesee, Pa., Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Weed and daughter, Nonna and son, Edwin and Miss Natilie [sic] Perry of North Rose, Mrs. Ella Blair, Duke Center, Albert Weimer of Port Allegany, Mr. and Mrs. James Edgar, Miss Virginia Morrisen [sic] and Gerald Brown and Earl Brown of Eldred.”
