Mr. Arthur Edward "Doc" Bates, age 80, of Bessemer, passed away April 12, 2000 at a local hospital.

Mr. Bates was a member of Bessemer First Assembly of God, was Chaplain of Masonic Lodge #795, and was retired from U.S. Steel Ore Mines. He was also Director of Building Operations for the YMCA - Downtown Birmingham Branch.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ruth Blankenship Bates of Bessemer; one son, Mr. Arthur E. Bates, Jr.(Deborah) of Bessemer; three daughters, Frances B. Hudson (Jack) of Lake City, Florida, Bonny Bates of Lakeland, Florida, and Juaniece B. Eiland (William) of Hueytown; five brothers, James Bates of Littleton, Colorado, John Bates of Bessemer, T.J. Bates of Hueytown, Houston Bates of Bessemer, and Frank Bates of Hueytown; three sisters, Allene Carlsen of Mobile, Estelle Culpepper of Bessemer, and Loretta Bates of Falls Church, Virginia; as well as nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
