VICTORIA - John Thomas Baker, 83, passed away peacefully on Dec. 25, 2007. He was born to Milton and Mamie Baker in Brady. His family moved to the Goliad area where he grew up.

He was only 17 when Pearl Harbor occurred, but with his father's permission, he joined the Navy and served through WWII in the Pacific on the battleship Idaho. During the war, he fell in love with flying, one of his great passions. After the war, he returned to Goliad, finished high school, and moved to Kingsville, where he taught flying and later became a duster pilot, an accomplishment he loved to tell about.

While in Kingsville, he married Frances Shindler, and began his other passion, his family. He took a job at the new DuPont plant in Victoria, where he worked for 35 years. He helped organize the Victoria Flying Club and the Victoria County Farmer's Market, was active in the Civil Air Patrol, and was a founding member of Grace Presbyterian Church.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. today, Jan. 4, 2008 at Rosewood Funeral Chapel. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008 at Grace Presbyterian Church with a reception following.
