Mary was the daughter of Sidney Edgerton, Akron attorney, prosecutor and U.S. congressman. After president Abraham Lincoln appointed Sidney to be chief justice of Idaho Territory in 1863, the Edgerton family moved west. In 1864 Lincoln named Sidney as the first governor of Montana Territory. After Lincoln was assassinated in 1865 the Edgertons moved back to Akron, Ohio.In 1885, at the age of 27, Mary took a position as assistant librarian in the small facility at the old Masonic Temple at South Howard and Mill Streets. Four years later Mary was named as the head librarian. She went on to head the purchase of reference books and implamented the Dewey Decimal System there. Mary asked wealthy businessman Andrew Carnegie for, and got, $70,000 to build the 21,000-book Carnegie Free Library on Akron's East Market and North High Streets. Mary retired as Head Librarian after 35-years of service.
