Ewell Dalton "Ed" Scales Jr., 89, died Friday morning. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He retired from the U.S. Marine Corps as a first lieutenant. He was a retired contractor. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Saunders Scales and is survived by his daughter, Judie Scales Hales and husband David of Virginia Beach; two sons, E.D. Scales III of Wilmington, N.C., and R.D. Scales of Raleigh, N.C.; one brother, Paul F. Scales of Sand Springs, Okla.; his companion, Jennifer May of New Bern; and three grandchildren, David Hales II, Anna P. Hales and Sam Scales. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at New Bern Memorial Cemetery with military honors. The Rev. Bill Wingard will officiate.
