Cleveland Rufus Crosby - Charleston - Cleveland Rufus Crosby, 87, of Charleston. South Carolina, widower of Leona Maxey Crosby, entered into eternal rest Friday, October 18, 2013. His funeral Service will be held Wednesday, October 23, 2013 in J Henry Stuhr Inc., West Ashley, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway @ 2:00 pm. Entombment, Live Oak Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM in Stuhr's West Ashley Chapel.
Mr. Crosby was born February 22, 1926 in Walterboro, South Carolina, son of Rufus Crosby and Grace Langdale Crosby. He served in the Navy during WWII aboard the USS Pittsburgh in South Pacific winning a Gold Battle Star, Golden Dragon, WWII Victory Metal and a personal thank you from Admiral Forrestal. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a life member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Kilwinning Lodge 4. He was also a life member of the Elks Lodge and the Omar Shrine Temple participating in the Gold Wings. He returned from the Naval Shipyard Shop 38 as a machinist. Mr. Crosby was a member of Northbridge Baptist Church.
He is survived by his daughter, Jacqueline C Rooke (Merrill Hanna)of Charleston, SC; his son, Cleveland Rufus Crosby Jr of New York, NY, his sister Miriam Weeks (Donnie)of Goose Creek, SC; two grandsons, Horrace Scott Rooke and Dustin Tyler Rooke, both of Charleston, SC; and four very special nieces: Carole McDonald, Dixie Matic (Ozzie), Gloria Williams (Bob), and Barbara Evans (Pat).
