Hincha Gilliam was an American War of Independence Veteran, Virginia State Militia, Brunswick County, Virginia.

Upon 24 November 1777, Hincha Gilliam first qualified as a military junior commissioned officer, at the entry-level rank of Ensign in the Virginia State Militia, Brunswick County (VA) Infantry Regiment.

Ensign and Adjutant were 2 former military ranks, which are no longer included in 21st Century American Army or Army National Guard military rank structure. These modern modifications are in contrast to the 18th Century (1700s) American Armed Forces, which were patterned after His Majesty's British Military. For perspective, Ensign rank would be comparable to, or equivalent of, 2nd Lieutenant (Pay Grade O-2), in the modern-day Virginia Army National Guard.

On 22 October 1778, Ensign Hincha Gilliam was promoted to the military commissioned officer rank of Captain in the Virginia State Militia, Brunswick County (VA) Infantry Regiment. Note, this Captaincy promotion was earned during wartime, reflecting positive performance (proficiency and conduct) by Ensign Hincha Gilliam, after proving himself nearly 1 full year, as a trustworthy leader of warriors.

Captain (Pay Grade O-3) remains a junior commissioned officer military rank in the modern American Army and Army National Guard military rank structure. Often, a Captain is assigned the responsibility of Company Commander, in an American Army or Army National Guard Infantry Company.
