PLYMOUTH, Ill. -- Loren E. Akers, 78, of Plymouth died at 7:11 p.m. Monday (Sept. 25, 2006) in Blessing Hospital, Quincy.

He was born Dec. 13, 1927, near Plymouth to Sidney T. and Mettie P. Simmons Akers. He first married Elaine Curry McMahon on Jan. 16, 1949, near Colmar. He later married Marcell Mendenhall Mayfield on May 19, 1982, in Avon. She preceded him in death.

Loren was employed by Chem-Gro Inc. in Bowen. In his early years, he owned and operated A. and M. Coal Service, Akers Fertilizer and Akers Excavating, all in Avon. He also established Colmar Fertilizer Co. in Colmar.

He was a 1945 graduate of Plymouth High School. He was a member of Bible Way Assembly of God Church in Carthage and a former member of Plymouth and Abingdon Assembly of God Churches, where he served as deacon. He had served on the Avon Volunteer Fire Department and was a member of the Avon Lions Club and the Avon Businessmen's Association. He was a strong supporter and past president of the Avon Fat Steer Show. He was a World War II Navy veteran.

Surviving are three sons, Craig (Debra) Akers of Avon, Steve Akers of Galesburg and Byron (Kim) Mayfield of Tucson, Ariz.; three daughters, Rita (Dan) Sinclair of Fort Worth, Texas, Lori Akers of Galesburg and Marcia (Dennis) Brazeal of Albuquerque, N.M.; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Eldon Akers of Colmar and James (Edna) Akers of Carthage; his former wife, Elaine Harrison of Galesburg; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Kevin C. Akers; two brothers, Adron and George Akers; a sister, Avery Allen; and a special friend, Norm Reeves Logan.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in the Hamilton Funeral Home, Plymouth, by the Rev. Tom Spain. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery near Plymouth.

A lunch will be served in St. Mary's Baptist Church after the service.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home with family present from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Bible Way Assembly of God Church or the Avon Fat Steer Show.
