Obituary of Gertrude Buell.
Gertrude Fairchild, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Fairchild, was born in Westville Center, New York, on October 25, 1884, and passed away to her eternal home on Easter Sunday, April 20, 1924, aged 39 years, 5 months and 26 days.
She was united in marriage to Waldo E. Buell on June 14, 1905. To this union were born six children, two of whom died in infancy.
She was united with the M. E. church in early girlhood. With her husband she moved to the state of Iowa in 1910.
In 1914, Rev. and Mrs. Buell entered the ministry of the Methodist church. The fields they served were Packwood, Lovilia, Cincinnati, Donnelson, Danville and Birmingham. On every field she was a devoted worker and a great help to her husband. Since losing her beloved husband a little over a year ago her zeal for the cause of her Master never flagged. She co-operated in every good work and we are confident that death to her was but transition from the church militant to the church triumphant.
She was a devoted mother in the home. She bore with fortitude the pain in her heart and sought to make life bright for her children. She can ill be spared but they will meet her in the better land. She leaves to mourn her loss her four children Edith, aged 18; Elsie, aged 13; Harold, aged 4 and Virginia Ray, aged 21 months.
Her father still lives in New York state as do her two brothers, Robert and Frank Fairchild. Three sisters are also left to mourn Mrs. Wallace McGregor, Mrs. Alton Hoadly, and Emillie Fairfield, all of Springfield, Mass. She leaves other relatives besides a host of friends in all the charges they sewed.
"Oh the joy that there awaits us
Over on the other shore.
When we clasp the hand of loved ones,
And part with them no more."
Funeral services were held in the M.E. church at Birmingham, Iowa, on Thursday, April 24, Dr. Hiram Gilbert offered prayer at the home. The pastor, Rev. G.H. Smith, presided at the church service. The scripture was read by Rev. J.L.Coleman. Prayer was offered by by Dr. George Minear. The sermon was delivered by Dr. E.J. Shook, from the text "Where I am there ye may be also"-John 14, 3.
Appropriate songs were sung by a quartet of Ezra, Glenn, Ora Williams and Craig Alton.
Interment was made in the M______ cemetery by the _______ __nd. The co_______.

Another Fatal Automobile Wreck

Mrs. John Goodman Killed Instantly, and Mrs. W.E. Buell Died on Way to Hospital

Our people were shocked last Sunday evening, when a message was received about 6:30 of the death of Mrs. John Goodman and Mrs. Gertrude Buell, and the serious injury of John Goodman and little granddaughter, Betty Manning when their car was struck by a Milwaukee passenger train about two miles west of Richland, Iowa which occurred about 5 o'clock.
On Sunday morning, Mr. and Mrs. Goodman and granddaughter, Bettie went to Ollie to spend the day with their son Floyd. Mrs. Buell went with them to visit some friends.
About 4 o'clock they started home. On coming to the railroad crossing, which is a very bad one, a deep cut obstructing the view, one of the party said, 'there's the train,' and for a moment Mr. Goodman checked the car, but seeing he could not stop, tried to make it across the track. The train struck the rear wheels, though a few seconds later would have been safe.
Mrs.Buell was the widow of the late Rev. Waldo Buell, Methodist minister at Birmingham, who died February 1, 1923, following the dedication of the new church, and during a series of meetings he was compelled to give up on account of an operation for appendicitis. He lingered only a few days after the operation. Mrs. Buell is survived by four children: Edith, a member of the Freshman class at Iowa Wesleyan; Elsie, 13 years old; Harold, 5 and Virginia 18 months. The body was brought to Birmingham on Tuesday evening, and the funeral service is not arranged for at this time, awaiting arrival of her brother and sister in the East. The interment will be in Maple Hill cemetery beside her husband.
