Entered the 7th Tennessee Infantry, which was organized at Camp Trousdale. The unit moved in May and July 1861 to Staunton, Virginia. For a time the outfit served under Stonewall Jackson. He was in many engagements throughout the war, among them Gettysburg, Seven Pines, Cold Harbor, the Siege of Petersburg and at Appommatox Court House.

He was the Captain of Company H. He received a wound at Gaines Mill, but returned to the field and was promoted to major in 1863.

Married Martha "Mattie" (Ready) Gordon, the widow of General John Hunt Morgan in 1876,
