The Deshler Rustler-June 7, 1922
John Diener was born May 24, 1841, in Mainlaus, Bavaria, Germany. He came to America and landed at New York, July 3, 1868. Located at Joliet, Ill., where he was married to Ida Eichof of Joliet, Ill., July 22, 1869. He came to Meridian; this state, July 5, 1876. Meridian was at that time the county seat of Thayer County. He came to Deshler October 3, 1916, where he lived until May 31, 1922. He died of carcinoma at the age of 81 years and 7 days. He leaves seven daughters. His wife died November 5, 1906. One son and one daughter are dead.
Brief services were held at the home in Deshler, at 12:30 p. m. Saturday, after which the body was taken in an auto hearse to the German Lutheran church at Gladstone, of which he was a member. A large procession in autoes (sic) accompanied the mourners. At the church Rev. Cholcher preached a funeral sermon in German, taking his text from Psalm 39, verses 5 to 8. Rev. Bangert preached the English sermon taking Psalm 4, verse 8, for his text. The scripture lesson at the house was St. Luke 11, verses 25 and 26.
