Samuel served for about three years during the Revolutionary War. He moved with his family from Shutesbury to Gates, in Orleans County, New York, where he lived the remainder of his life. However, he died while visiting E. Wallingford, Vermont, and this is where he is buried with family members. He had eight children, all with his first wife.
While there is no record of his burial here, it is not unlikely that Samuel is buried here where his sister, Rhoda, and brother-in-law were later buried.
