Her given name was Martha Ida Cotton but she went by Ida probably because her mother also was named Martha.
Martha Ida Cotton was born on 4 Mar 1863 in Williamson County, TN to parents William Henry Cotton (1832-1892) and Martha Jane Ballard Cotton (1829-1902). They were farmers in Williamson and her father had been in the 11th Tenn Cavalry of the Confederate Army during the Civil War. The Cotton family is of Scotch-Irish descent.
She was one of seven children. Her siblings include:
Henry William Cotton (?1855-1937)
Sarah Jane Cotton (?1855-1916)
Charles C. Cotton (1858-?)
William Francis Cotton (1859-1945)
Myra Mollie Ann Cotton (1866-1947)
Delia Nancy Cotton (1869-1917)
Ida married Jesse Henry Frank McGee (1857-1918) on 18 Dec 1879 at the age of 16 in Williamson County. He was a teamster and farmer. Her husband went by the name Frank. They had the following children: Sally McGee (1882-1962), Alice A. McGee (1884-?), William Franklin McGee (1885-1945), Mary Maggie McGee (1889-1956) and Maud Ursula McGee (1891-1923).
They moved to Davidson County, TN by the age of 37 in 1900 and then to Paragould, AR some time before the age of 54 in 1920. The move to Arkansas was likely in part to be near her daughter Maud.
Her daughter Maud died of measles in Grider, AR at the age of 31 in 1923 leaving 3 young girls (Mattie, Juanita, and Louise, ages 11, 7 and 4) to be cared for by their step- father Luther Martin Tanner Sr. who was already 63 years old. So it is likely that Ida helped to raise the girls.
Ida died on 24 Nov 1939 of heart disease and high blood pressure at the age of 76 in Paragould and was buried in Linwood Cemetery.
