Nettie Graves 73, Found Dead In Home of Daughter in Sioux City
Mrs. Nettie Graves, 73, Huron, S.D., was found asphyxiated at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Maude Roe here late yesterday. Police theorized the asphyxiation was accidental.
Mrs. Roe. left her mother about noon, she said and returned about six o'clock to find her mother slumped in a rocking chair. Both jets of a small gas stove were open.
Police said they believed Mrs. Graves had become dizzy after turning on the jets and had sat down. A pot on the stove indicated she had intended to heat some coffee.
Dr. Joe Kingston, the deputy coroner, said he believed the woman had been dead about three hours when he was called. Occupants of an apartment in the same building said they could smell the odor of gas as early as 3 o'clock.
Mrs. Graves had been visiting with her daughter since last week and had intended to return to Huron soon, Mrs. Roe said.
Mrs. Graves was the mother of Miss Lulu Graves of Huron and of Mrs. William Knutz, who resides on a farm south of Huron. Miss Graves left last night for Sioux City.
The body is expected to arrive here tonight and then will be taken to Carthage for funeral services and burial, which will probably take place Sunday. Mrs. Gravews formerly lived in Carthage.
