Born in Grünewald, Neustettin, Pommern, Prussia which after WWII is now known as Mieszałki, Gmina Grzmiąca, Szczecinek County, West Pomeranian Voivodeship, in north-western Poland

German birth records show Herman's recorded name was Herman Eduard Richard Kraeft - Mother's name was Caroline Ost. Father's name was Carl Kraeft.

Herman Kraft

Herman E. Kraft, aged 53 years, died at his home in Elkton village Tuesday morning, March 12 1912. He had been in failing health for the past two years with cancer of the stomach. He was born in Germany Aug. 23, 1858 and came with his parents to America in 1862, they settling in Milwaukee, Wis. They remained there one year then moved to Red Wing, Minn., where Herman grew up and was educated. He was married to Bertha Holtz, March 23, 1878. Mr. and Mrs. Kraft moved to a farm near Dexter, Minn. and later to near Elkton, occupying their present home for the past twenty years. He and his family have been among our most highly regarded and respected citizens. The widow and eleven children survive: Fred C. and Albert D. Kraft living on farms near Elkton; Maggie, Bennie, Anne, Tracy, Frances, Ella, Georgie and Clara at home, and Henry at Owatonna. Deceased leaves three brothers and four sisters: Albert B Kraft living on a farm near Elkton, Burnett and Fred of California; Mrs. Tracy Naas and Mrs. Bertha M Elligott of Winona; Mrs. Mary Seebach of Portland, ND and Mrs. Laura Gilson of Mankato. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon from St. John's Lutheran church near Elkton of which Mr. Kraft was a devoted member. Deceased was a kind and loving husband and father, was honest and upright in all his dealings and will be greatly missed not only by his family but as a citizen.
