Charles H. "Cotton" Harris

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Charles H. (Cotton) Harris, 83 beloved husband of sixty years of Mrs. Ruth Rountree Harris, entered into rest on Friday, May 2, 2008, after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. Funeral services will be held at The Hill Baptist Church on Monday, May 5, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. with Dr. Michael Ruffin and Dr. Al Cadenhead officiating . Burial will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be his nephews Dan Harris, Jr, Jimmy Harris, Phillip Harris and Rob Hefner; and Jimmy Mills and Buck Salter. Honorary pallbearers will be Russell E. Blanchard, Jr., Elder Tom Rountree and Edward B. Stalnaker. Additional survivors include his devoted son, John David Harris of Augusta; three grandchildren, Kilby B. Harris, J. Trevor Turner, and Karly H. Brown (Chris), all of the Augusta area; three great grandchildren, Katelyn Brown, Emily Turner and Emma Jolley. Also two brothers, Dan M. Harris of Augusta and Dr. J. Hoffman Harris (Norma) of Hickory, NC. Two children, Ronnie Harris, and Jan Harris Turner predeceased him. A native of Augusta, he was a graduate of Richmond Academy, and attended the Junior College of Augusta where he played on the college's first baseball team. He signed a contract with the Washington Senators' baseball team, but played only a short time due to the WWII draft. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving four years. After WWII he played semi-pro ball in North Carolina, Alabama and Macon, Georgia, and in the Ogeechee League in Millen, Georgia. Cotton was an avid sports fan, especially of baseball and softball, coaching all levels with the Richmond County Recreation Department. He also coached numerous men's softball teams, and in 1991, was inducted into the Georgia ASA Hall of Honor as a manager. He was a true-blue Augusta Greenjackets fan and a member of The Diamond Club. He was a "natural born" furniture salesman, and worked with J B White for 28 years. Cotton was a member and deacon of The Hill Baptist Church. He was a loving husband, father, granddad, great-granddad, brother, brother-in-law, uncle and friend.
