Born in the Cardston area to James and Rhoda May, by 1916 Sterling was living with his sister and brother-in-law Agnes and John McLean in Alberta.

Sterling immigrated to the U.S. in 1945 at the Eastport, Idaho border crossing.

The family never abandoned Canada, however, as Sterling's wife Edith passed away in North Vancouver B.C. and both are buried in Lethbridge.
