George Wood, son of James and Margaret Sharon Wood, was born on May 13, 1770, in Charleston, South Carolina. His father, James, was a blacksmith, who kept a country store and cooper shop about 60 miles west of Charleston, SC. He organized a company of 30 colonials in a home guard, but declined a commission offered by General Francis Marion. Immediately following the Battle of Eutaw Springs, two British soldiers stopped in James' blacksmith shop to have their horses re-shod. James shod one horse, and its rider rode away. He later struck the other soldier and, in fear for his life and that of his family, fled South Carolina, going North. The family remained in Virginia until the end of the war. The family returned to South Carolina to sell their property and realty, and prepared to move to the Falls of the Ohio.1786, the Wood family reached the Falls (Louisville), where they bought and cultivated the land. George Wood married Mary Burge and moved further to the land near present Borden, Indiana, which they helped to found. They had at least four sons and three daughters. George Wood died on June 15, 1819, in Borden, Indiana, at the age of 49, and is buried there in the Wood Cemetery in present day Borden, Indiana.
