In Sweden's history a famine struck again in the late 1800's and thousands were forced to leave the beautiful land. During this great surge of migration, Lars Akesson Sjøstrand and Anna Sandgren were raising their family. They had been employed in Copenhagen and married there. They eventually moved back to Sweden, settling in Norra Mellby, a small farming community in Skane Lan, the southernmost province of Sweden. Ernest Joakim was born 27 February 1880 and was christened in the town's Lutheran Church. Ernest learned the trade of a tailor which would serve him during his adult years. He met Mormon missionaries in his area, joined the church, and eventually emigrated to America and ultimately settled in American Fork, Utah, where he met his future wife Myrtle Chipman Robinson. They married June 21, 1911. Ernest opened a men's clothing store in American Fork. Later, he and Myrtle worked in the tailoring department at The Paris Company in Salt Lake City. Together they raised 10 children: Selma, Genevieve, Ernest L., Lillian, Vivian, Gareth, Richard, James, Steven and Eugene. Ernest and Eugene died during their childhood years. Ernest was a faithful member of the LDS Church and loved serving in various callings including bishop of the American Fork 1st Ward from 1940 to 1945. Ernest was ill on Sunday afternoon, 22 April 1951. Early Monday morning on 23 April, his shocked wife found him on the floor. He had suffered a coronary occlusion. His funeral was held 26 April 1951. Everyone had praise for their fallen comrade, friend, relative and leader. Many were the testimonials borne to Ernest's family of the acts, services and monetary benefits to people in all walks of life, acts performed quietly and kindly. He was buried in the American Fork city cemetery.
