Springfield Center, Nov. 3—(Special). On Wednesday the shocking intelligence of Mrs. E. N. Catlin's death came and cast a gloom over the whole community, where she was so familiarly known. Mrs. Catlin formerly resided here, and since her residence in Boston, spent every returning summer at the family's summer home here. It was a great pleasure to enjoy her acquaintance and hear her converse. She possessed great intellect and a beautiful, pure mind. Her life was a most exemplary one. Her thoughts were for others, and she always met her fellow beings in a cheerful mood and with a kindly smile. Her home life was a very pleasant one. She was a kind and loving wife and a fond mother. The bereaved husband and two daughters, Mrs. Walter H. Baldwin and Mrs. Charles Larabee, have the deepest sympathy of a large circle of friends. Mrs. Catlin was ill but two days, pneumonia being the cause of death. Mrs. Catlin is also survived by one sister, Mrs. T. F. Pier of this village, and one brother, Lucius Shipman of Buffalo.
The funeral of Mrs. Catlin was held at the summer residence here, where the remains were brought, to-day at 12 o'clock. A large number of friends attended. Mrs. Catlin was 69 years of age and was married 39 years ago [on 25 Oct 1865 in Springfield Center] to E.[Edwin] N. Catlin by Rev. S. [Samuel] R. Ward of Richfield Springs, who conducted the funeral services. The bearers were her nephews, Clarence Pier, Dr. Francis E. Van Derveer, G. Lynn Van Derveer; her brother-in-law William Johnson of Utica, and son-in-law W. H. Baldwin of Boston. The floral tributes were profuse and elegant. The remains were buried in Lakewood cemetery at Cooperstown, undertaker Parshall of Cooperstown having charge.
Those from out of town who were in attendance at the funeral were W. Johnson, Mrs. Mary Perkins, Miss T. Golden, Utica; Dr. and Mrs. S. P. Barber and Benton Whipple, Mr. and Mrs. Tuller, Mrs. Jewell, Madison Nedder, Mrs. Dawn, Richfield Springs; Mrs. Dr. Parshall, Cooperstown; Mrs. Lucius Canfield, W. H. Palmer, Fort Plain. The funeral of Mrs. Catlin was also held in Boston on Thursday at 5 p.m. The remains and family left Boston Friday morning, reaching Utica at 8 p.m. and were met by O. T. Golden of Utica and at Richfield Springs by the officiating minister, Mr. Ward, and many friends met the bereaved family.
