Mary grew up as the oldest daughter of a prominent Philadelphia businessman. In 1819, when she was 20, her father took his family, by wagon and boat to St. Louis to take control of his investments there. Nov. 13, 1823, she married John Dougherty, who was a trapper,explorer and Indian Agent working out of, then primitive, Fort Leavenworth. The family later moved to Liberty, Clay, MO. After her husband died in 1860, she moved back to Philadelphia to live with her daughter, Annie Ruff.
On 28 Oct 1830, Mary's sister, Rachel married Lt. Philip St.George Cooke Later General) at Mary's quarters at Cantonment Leavenworth by Rev. Mr. Edwards. This marriage was recorded in Clay County, MO, since Kansas was not a territory of the US at that time.
