Obituary from the Edwardsville Intelligencer, Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois, Tuesday, November 27, 1951, page 2:
  John H. Bertels, a retired farmer of Dorsey, died Monday at 7 a.m. at the Mather Nursing home in Alton where he had been a patient for the past two and one-half years.
  He was born Nov. 13, 1870, at Horseshoe Lake near East St. Louis, and had attained the age of 81 years and 13 days. His parents were the late Dietrich and Anna Heuer Bertels. His wife, the former Miss Katherine Emde, preceded him in death Sept. 16, 1945.
  Surviving are five sons, Louis, John A., Wilbert E., Clarence J. and Fred E. Bertels, all of Dorsey; six daughters, Mrs. Ed Krieger of Gillespie, Mrs. William Krieger, Mrs. Ferd Kuethe, Mrs. Ellie Eden of Dorsey, Mrs. Arthur Duelm of Bunker Hill and Miss Louise Bertels of Lincoln, Ill.; one sister, Mrs. Mary Meyer of Collinsville; one brother, William G. Bertels of Dorsey; 22 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
  He was a life-long member of the Emmaus Lutheran church at Dorsey.
  Friends may call at the Jacoby funeral home in Bunker Hill until 1:30 p.m. Wednesday when brief services will be held from the funeral home and at 2 o'clock from the Emmaus Lutheran church. The Rev. Otto Strothman will have charge of the services.
  Interment will be in the Lutheran cemetery.
