Maurice V. Hartz, 88 of Mapleton, ND, died on Saturday, August 31, 2013 in the Palliative Care Unit of Sanford Health in Fargo.

Maurice was born on May 23, 1925 in the Cavalier/Neche, ND area to Jacob and Isabelle (Hearst) Hartz, the second oldest of 7 children. He attended school in Cavalier and enlisted in the Navy 3 days before graduation. He served in active combat in the Pacific Theater during WWII. He married Margaret Bauer on July 1, 1949 in Breckenridge, MN where they farmed. In 1950 they bought a farm near Mapleton, ND. Maurice loved farming and working with his hands. He was an accomplished carpenter and welder and worked for Versatile Manufacturing where he also served as president of the local labor union. He served as Postmaster for the City of Mapleton, on the Mapleton School Board and as secretary/treasurer for 24 years for Durbin Township. He retired in 1989 after suffering a heart attack and he gave full credit for his recovery to his dogs. He was Margaret's primary caregiver during her final years-visiting and feeding her every day until her death in 2005. Through an old Navy friend, he met Donna Cornell in Arizona and the couple married on August 9, 2008 at the farm near Mapleton. They spent the winters in Arizona and the summers in North Dakota and enjoyed travelling.

He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Allison Henriksen, Billy J. Hartz and Donna Hartz.

Maurice is survived by his wife, Donna of Scottsdale, AZ; son, Brenton Hartz of Mapleton, ND; granddaughters, Justine Hartz of Minneapolis, MN and Ella Weller (Hartz) of Fargo; siblings, Bob (Lucille) Hartz of Lake City, MN, Willard Hartz of West Palm Beach, FL, Marian Jean Hartz of Minneapolis, MN; step-children, Deb (Gene) Dadamo of Phoenix, AZ, Darrell Cornell of Roseville, CA and Dan Cornell of Fortuna, CA.

Visitation: Friday, September 6 from 5-7 pm at West Funeral Home, West Fargo and also one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Prayer Service: Friday at 7:00 pm at the funeral home.

Funeral Mass: Saturday, September 7 at 10:00 am at St. Leo's Catholic Church, Casselton.

Final Resting Place: Carrington Cemetery, Carrington, ND.
