The funeral for Robert Donald Haynes, 78, of 2320 Fairystone Park Highway, Bassett, who died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001, will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Bassett. The Revs. Lew Bennett and Doby Salmons will officiate. Burial will follow in Roselawn Burial Park.

The body will be placed in the First Baptist Church at 5 p.m. today for visitation. The family will be at the church to receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today.

Born May 12, 1923, at Philpott in Henry County, he was a son of the late Robert Weldon Haynes and the late Mary Virginia Eggleston Haynes. Also preceding him in death were his wife, Dorothy Martin Haynes in 1998; a sister, Margaret Ann Haynes; and a brother, Patrick Henry "Buck" Haynes.

He owned and operated the Main Street Grocery in Bassett for 39 years, and for 25 years he was a member of both the Bassett Volunteer Fire Department and the Bassett Rescue Squad.

For more than 60 years he had been a member of the First Baptist Church of Bassett, where he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. He also was a pastoral caregiver at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.

Surviving are three sons, Dr. Robert Donald Haynes Jr. of Baltimore, Md., Dr. William Allison Haynes of Greenville, N.C., and Wesley Martin Haynes of Bassett; and six grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Bassett, 2590 Riverside Drive, Bassett, Va. 24055.
