Matilda Jane was the daughter of Commodore Perry Baker and Emily Fort. She was raised in Washington County, AR, and was married there to William Johnson on 8 June 1854. They had moved to Hempstead County by 1870 and were in Howard County in 1880. Children were Mary Jane (married Henry Crofton), Margaret E. "Maggie" (married Benjamin Lane Landers), Perry L.(married C. Belle Henson) and Melrosa (married E.D. Holland).
