Florence Ruth (Hanush) Hammond

Florence Ruth (Harnish) Hammond, 89, of 10483 Sleepys Hollow Lane, Barree Township, Petersburg, died Monday, Sept. 25, 2006 at 12:50 p.m. at Westminster Woods, Huntingdon, where she had resided since Dec. 29, 2005.

She and her husband resided at Fairfield Farms, the John W. Swigart property in Petersburg and moved to her son and daughter-in-laws home in Barree Township in August 2003.

She spent nearly her entire life in Huntingdon County, beginning with her early life in Morris Township. She was a descendent of the earliest settlers of Canoe Valley- Morris Township and Keller Church, the famous landmark church at the Huntingdon- Blair County line.

Mrs. Hammond was born on May 28, 1917 in Morris Township, the daughter of Clair Lloyd and Elsie Jane (Seigel) Harnish.

She married John Richard Hammond, Sr. on January 23, 1937 in Cumberland, MD. She enjoyed a long-time loving marriage of 67 years. Mr. Hammond preceded her in death on Sept. 3, 2005.

They were the parents of seven children, the oldest, a son, Donald Nathaniel Hammond preceded his parents in death on May 28, 2005.

Surviving are three sons: John Richard Hammond, Jr. and his wife Nancy of Tyrone, Lloyd Franklin Hammond and his wife Emily of Barree Township, Petersburg and Daniel Lee Hammond of Boalsburg; three daughters: Sara Jane Bledsoe and her husband John of Lindale, TX, Betty Ann LaCavera of Dover, DE and Sandra Louise Kelly and her husband Bill of Martinez, GA.; 20 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her son, she was preceded in death by a brother Lloyd Seigel Harnish and a sister Kathryn Louise Harnish.

Mrs. Hammond was primarily a homemaker her entire life. She was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church. She traveled and visited most of the states and landmarks in the United States and Canada, from coast to coast.

She was a graduate of the Alexandria High School Class of 1935.

Family and friends are invited to the visitation from 6 to 9 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 28, 2006 and from 10 a.m. until the hour of the service Friday, Sept. 29, 2006 at the Cutright-Speck Funeral Home- Juniata Valley Chapel, 412 Main Street, Alexandria 16611.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 29, 2006 at the Cutright-Speck Funeral Home- Juniata Valley Chapel, 412 Main St., Alexandria with Pastor Joleen Willis officiating. Interment will be at Alexandria Presbyterian Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Faith United Methodist Church, Greenwood Road, Petersburg, PA 16669, the Home Nursing Agency, 201 Chestnut Avenue, Post Office Box 352, Altoona, PA 16603 or the Alzheimer's Association, 3544 North Progress Avenue, Suite 205, Harrisburg, PA 17110.
