Mattie Pattie Morrisett was the daughter of James Knox Polk Morrisett 1844 – 1912 and Elizabeth Louisiana Jane Kite 1847 – 1907. Her siblings were: John James Morrisett 1870; Margaret Lucinda Maggie Morrisett 1871; Robert L Morrisett 1873 – 1948; Joseph Adrian Joe Morrisett 1875 – 1965 and Josephine Adeline Addie Morrisett 1880.

On Dec. 23, 1903 Mattie became the bride of Newton Phillip Short. Together they had 9 children. They were: Baby Short 1905 – 1905; Leola Dale Short 1906 – 1926; Raymond Earl Short 1908 – 1985; William Ross Short 1910 – 1991; Jessie Lee Short 1912 – 1964; Phillip Newt Short 1914 – 1986; Glen Short 1917 – 1917; Paul Short 1918 – 1919 and Richard Lee Short 1921.

In 1910 they were living on a rented farm near Bulls Gap Tennessee. Mattie, Newt, a daughter, Leola, and son, Raymond, and Newt's mother Eliza Jane were living in the same household.

By the 1920 census, Newt has moved the family to rural Deer Creek, Carroll, Indiana. They were living in a rented house and he was employed as a farmer.

On June 11, 1927 in Madison Township, Carroll County, Indiana, was a very sad day for Newt and his family, His dear Mattie passed away. A few days later Newt and the family and
friends gathered in the La Fontaine IOOF Cemetery, La Fontaine, Wabash County,Indiana, at a grave site he chose for her, to bid his beloved Mattie to Rest in Peace.
