John William BEWLEY was born in Tennessee to Rev. John G., a Methodist minister who was also a native of Tennessee, and Catharine HUNTER BEWLEY. After the death of John's father in 1830 he stayed in Tennessee for several years where he met and married Catharine ELLIS in 1823 and started a family. In 1834 he started with his family for Missouri. In 1836 he moved to Lafayette, Indiana. In 1845 he is living in Clinton Co, MO. He left for Oregon in May of 1847. John William was the Captain of the wagon train west. He stopped at the Whitman Mission where he left two of his children- Lorinda and Crockett-and continued on to Oregon. After learning of the death of his son and the capture of his daughter in the Whitman Massacre, he suffered an apparent heart attack and died at the base of the Cascades. He was buried on the trail. His widow Catharine and the remaining children continued on to Oregon City where she stayed and ran a boarding house for a time. She later married Colonel James B. GRAVES and moved to Sheridan.
