Robert Balmer, D.D.S.T.P.,
Minister of the First
United Secession Congregation
in this town and
Professor of Systematic Theology
to the United Secession Church.
Born 22d November 1787
Ordained 23d March 1814
Died 1st July 1844
In the 57th year of his age.
The 31st of his Ministry
and the 11th of his Professorship.
Dr. Balmer
was a man of high endowments,
attainments and worth.
A sincere and devout Christian.
An accurate and elegant scholar.
A learned and sound divine.
An instructive and impressive preacher.
A faithful and affectionate pastor.
An able and skillful tutor.
An enlightened and ardent friend
of liberty, order and peace
in the church and in the state.
Firm yet liberal in his principles.
Kind and generous in his dispositions.
Bland yet dignified in his demeanor.
and in the discharge of all the duties
of ecclesiastical
civil, social and domestic life.
Most Conscientious.

Though dead he yet lives in the fruits
of his labors.
These will prove a more enduring memorial
than this monument.
Erected by his sorrowing congregation,

and of their grateful remembrance
