He married Anna Mariah Stallman at the age of 18 in Fairfield, Jefferson County, Iowa. According to Court documents provided to me by Verda Baird, a historian of the Jefferson County Court house and Fairfield Public Library. Of that union they had a son named William Sherman Lee. Shortly after Anna Mariah divorced him because of his drinking problem.
William married a second time at the age of 22 to Margaret 'Maggie' Wilson. He was 5 years older than Maggie. At some point William grew discontent and left his wife and moved to Illinois. It is not known what happened to Maggie, if she remarried or where she passed. He came from a good family that was well respected in Fairfield
He had nine siblings, Doctor John H., Cynthia Ann, Rev Daniel H., Richard Harrison, Celia Elizabeth, Sarah L Jane, Amos, Mary Iowa and Louisa Adeline Lee.
William was bought up with a Christian mother and a drinking father.
Being on his own he got in with the wrong crowd starting with a cousin Harry Lee who owned a house of prostitution which he then sold to William. A known Opium, Morphine user and prostitute Jessie demanded favors of him to buy drugs, it is known that while drunk he had a temper and denied her request for money, he then violently murdered her and threw her into the river, the rest is history with him being tried and hung in Illinois with his brothers Doctor John H and Rev Daniel H Lee at his side.
His brothers bought him back home to Fairfield, Jefferson County, Penn Township, Iowa to be buried along side his mother Julia Ann Eddleman Lee in the old Perlee Cemetery in Fairfield, Jefferson County, Iowa. He was 29 years of age, a lesson learned to late.
