Charlton W. Tebeau

SPRINGFIELD -- Charlton W. Tebeau, 95, died Feb. 2 at Effingham Hospital.

The native of Effingham County was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and had taught the Adult Sunday School Class. He received the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters from the University of Miami, where he was professor of history for 32 years and chairman of the department for 23 years.

He was a historian and author of numerous books and articles on Florida history. He was active in a variety of organizations from which he received numerous honors. He was director and past president of the Historical Association of Southern Florida, where the library was named the Charlton W. Tebeau Library of Florida History in 1986. A former student anonymously endowed $1 million to the Charlton W. Tebeau Chair of American History at the University of Miami.

He was the widower of Violet H. Tebeau and retired to Springfield in 1976.

SURVIVORS: his brother and sisters-in-law, Arte and Eula Maud Tebeau and Willie Tebeau, all of Springfield; two nephews and two nieces.
