VERNON L. AFFELD -- VALPARAISO, IN
Vernon L. Affeld, 91 of Valparaiso, passed away Saturday, August 17, 2013. He was born February 11, 1922 in Valparaiso to Ernest and Jennie (Bastel) Affeld and graduated from Valparaiso High School in 1940, before serving with the U. S. Navy during WWII. Vern served for 16 years with the U. S. Postal Service as a clerk in the Valparaiso office and was a member of Heritage Lutheran Church.
On August 28, 1943 he married Dorothy Sauerland, who preceded him in death in 2009. Also preceding him in death were his children: Susan Kotys in 2001, Dean Affeld in 2003 and Ralph Affeld in 2006; and siblings: Fred, Erma, Florence, Treva, Howard and Robert. Survivors include his grandchildren: Angie, Kristie, Laurie, Laura, Brenda, David and Stefanie; great-grandchildren: Arianna, Emily, Gracie, Braydon, Nicole, Gabrielle, Jenna, Miles and Mason; sister, Rosie Hess; and daughter-in-law, Mary Affeld.
Following cremation at Angelcrest Crematory, a committal service will be held Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at Memorial Park Cemetery, Valparaiso with Rev. Joseph Ostafinski officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Heritage Lutheran Church.
