Mr. Benson served in the United States Navy during WWII, and returned to Erwin afterwards to work in the insurance industry with Western-Southern Life Insurance.
A graveside service will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, August 20, 2013, at Erwin Memorial Park.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years: Hallie Tart Benson, his daughter; Tonia B. Maynor and husband Hughie of Coats, a son; Michael Benson and wife Kathleen of Raleigh, grandchildren; Karen Beitar and husband Jehad, Hope Thompson, Paula Day, Brandy Maynor and Hughie Paul Maynor, Jr. He is also survived by 14 great-grandchildren.
Flowers are welcomed and memorials may also be made to: Disabled American Veterans, DAV Chapter #74, P.O. Box 66, Erwin, NC 28339
The family will receive friends and family after the service at the cemetery, and at other times at the home of Tonia and Hughie Maynor.
