Frank's parents and older siblings immigrated to the United States on the Habsburg leaving departure port of Bremen, Germany and arriving at the port of New York on April 19, 1881. After arrival in New York, the family went to Hiawatha, Kansas where a paternal uncle lived. It is there that Frank was born. Shortly after, the family re-located to Chicago, Illinois, where his parents had two more children. In 1888, Frank's mother died, and his father remarried later that year.

The 1900 census shows Frank living in Wonewoc, Juneau, Wisconsin with his father August, stepmother Johanna, sister Frances, step-sister Lizzie (Johanna's daughter from her first marriage), half-sister Rose, half-brother Robert, half-sister Mabel, half-sister Hattie, half-brother Henry, and half-sister Eva.

Frank, (according to the 1905 Wisconsin state census), lived in Woodland, Sauk, Wisconsin with his half-siblings Rose and Robert -- all were orphaned by this time.

In 1910, per the 1910 census, Frank was living with his sister Frances (Hein) Arnold and her family in Chicago, Cook, Illinois.

Per the 1920 census, in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, Frank, along with his wife and their two children, lived in the home of his mother-in-law, Minnie Buchholtz.

The 1930 and 1940 censuses show Frank, his wife, and children continuing to reside in Chicago, Cook, Illinois.
