Young Herman, together with his parents, and brothers August, Wilhelm, and Albert immigrated to the United States on the Habsburg leaving departure port of Bremen, Germany and arriving at the port of New York on April 19, 1881.
After arrival in New York, Herman and family went to Hiawatha, Kansas. His brother Frank was born while in Hiawatha and then the family re-located to Chicago, Illinois, where his parents had two more children. Herman's mother died in 1888 and his father remarried later that year.
