Obituary from the Decatur County Journal-Iowa January 11, 1900:
William Jackson Ball was born in Charleston, South Carolina, May 25, 1819, and moved to Fayette County, Indiana, when a child and after arriving at the years of manhood was married to Miss. Foxwell in 1841. Enlisted in Marshall County, same state on the 2nd day of August, 1862, in Company C 4th Indiana Cavalry and served faithfully until the 8th of June, 1865, when he was mustered out as non-commissioned officer, being promoted for bravery at Champion's Hill, Mississippi, April, 1863. Comrade Ball moved to the state of Missouri after the war and lived there for five years and then moved to Decatur County where he lived the remainder of his life.
Reverend Ball was converted to God in the year 1858 and joined the Methodist Church in Fayette County, Indiana and lived an earnest Christian life. He wa a charter member of the Decatur Post, No. 401 G.A.R. and was very highly esteemed by all his comrades.
Tuesday, January 2nd the loving husband and faithful friend, the brave soldier was called to his reward. May our end be like his. Mr. Ball was buried Wednesday. Funeral at the house at 11 o'clock.
