George Schuetz

George C. Schuetz, 84, of 1922 12th St., Peru, formerly of Mendota, died at 2 a.m. Dec. 31, 1999, in St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria, where he had been a patient for two hours.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday in St. John's Lutheran Church, Peru. The Rev. C. Carl Eklof will officiate. Burial will be in Lutheran Cemetery, Mendota, with graveside flag-folding ceremonies by Mendota VFW Post 4079.

Vitiations will be 4-7 p.m. Sunday in Mueller Funeral Home, Peru and 9:30 a.m. until the time of services Monday in the church.

Mr. Schuetz was born Aug 5, 1915, in Mendota, to Carl and Caroline (Pohl) Schuetz. He married Mary Van Meter on June 8, 1947, in Mendota. He was preceded in death by his first wife in July 1980. He later married Lyla Cleer Gapen on Aug. 22, 1981.

He was a graduate of Mendota High School. He served for five years in the U.S. Army and was a staff sergeant during World War II in the Pacific theater of operations. He owned and operated Schuetz Grocery Store in Mendota for 30 years. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Peru.

Survivors include his wife, Lyla, of Peru; two daughters, Barbara Stephenitch of Crystal Lake and Mary Lou (Ron) Blase of Beach Park, Ill.; on stepson, Gary (Carol) Gapen of Madison, Wis. and five grandchildren.
Memorials may be directed to St. John's Lutheran Church, Peru.
