Naval Architect. Arrived in U.S. in 1793 and employed by Secretary of War Knox to assist in the design and construction of the proposed navy. With Joshua Humphreys and William Doughty, Fox designed the USS Constitution, better known as "Old Ironsides" which is currently berthed in Boston and remains a commissioned ship of the US Navy to this day. With Humphreys and Doughty, Fox was also responsible for the design of the USS United States and the original USS Constellation. On his own, Fox designed the frigates Crescent, Pickering, Eagle and Dillegence, as well as the revenue cutters USS Philadelphia, USS John Adams and USS Philadelphia. A Quaker, Fox was disowned by the Philadelphia Meeting for engaging in war activities although he was restored in good faith to the Quaker religion after the War of 1812. Fox moved to the hills of Eastern Ohio in 1814 where he would die in 1847.
