Katherine Deihl Kraatz was born in Bavaria. When she was a girl of fourteen years, her father, following the death of his wife, brought his family to this country, landing at Galveston and going from there to Houston to live. The Deihls were a talented family of musicians and shortly after settling in Houston they organized an orchestra with Katherine playing the violin. Two of the sons for a long period of time conducted the Deihl conservatory of music there. When a young woman, Katherine went to Austin where she was employed at the State Hospital. It was here that she met and married Louis Hancock, whose family owned the old Hancock opera house. In 1897 she came to Rockdale, and two years later she was married to Otto Kraatz.
