Whitworth was called Whit by his family and friends. He is the son of Whitworth and Dorothy (Anger) Ferguson. He was raised in the City of Buffalo, New York with his siblings: Barbara and Don.

Whit is a graduate of Nichols School and Iowa State University, where he earned a degree in general engineering. He was a veteran of the United States Navy.

Whit married Elizabeth Rice. Together they raised their children: Jayne, Mary, Laura, and Whitworth III.

Whit and Elizabeth divorced.

Whit married Dorothy Taylor. They had two exchange students, Ross and Clarke Kennedy (brothers) of Ireland. Whit is sadly missed by his brother-in-law William J. Taylor. They were very good friends.

Whit's career in the electric construction business spanned more than 50 years, starting with a part-time job at his family's electric firm (Ferguson Electric Construction Co., Inc.) while in high school.

Whit is the retired chairman of Ferguson Electric Holdings Corporation who was long active in Buffalo community affairs. He died suddenly in Naples Community Hospital, Naples, Florida.

Rest in Peace.
