Born on the family farm in Wakefield (Township) of Stearns County, Mathias was the oldest of twelve children (five sons & seven daughters) born to Michael C. & Elizabeth (Braun) Minnerath.

On 26 September 1904, Mathias married Anna M. Wedl at Saint Boniface Catholic Church in Cold Spring, MN; he was age 28, she was 20. He & Elizabeth farmed north of Cold Spring in the area called the Bavarian Settlement.
