An excerpt from a biography by her daughter states:
"Ruth made the girl's dresses from feed sacks, washed the laundry on a scrub board, then a ringer washer, made lye soap and hominy, put in a huge garden, canned all the fruits and vegetables that the family ate the next winter, made her own quilts, always had beautiful flowers, and you could always get a piece of pie or cake anytime you visited her home.

Ruth cooked three meals a day, had something baked and ready for the kids after school – she could whip up a meal fit for a king in minutes – never using measurements, a pinch of this and a dash of that. She fed anyone who happened to show up at mealtimes, and there was always plenty to eat, and plenty of people who showed up.

To the delight of her children, she could sometimes, be coaxed to do the Charleston for them.

Ruth attended the Church of Christ."
