On 3 June 1851, in Busti, Chautauqua County, New York, Ellen Maria Broadhead was born to Jabez B. and Harriet Maria Smith Broadhead.

On 04 April 1826, Jabez B. Broadhead was born in Yorkshire, England. A year or so later, his parents immigrated to America and settled in Hudson, New York. In 1832, they moved to Busti, Chautauqua County, New York.

On 01 September 1850, in Jamestown, New York, he married Harriet Maria Smith. In 1858, the Broadheads relocated to Linn County, Kansas Territory.

On 2 May 1859, the couple had another child, May Florence Broadhead. On 25 December 1880, in Mound City, Linn County, Kansas, May married Charles Wesley Forbes. On 22 December 1926, May Forbes died, apparently in Linn County, Kansas.

On 28 July 1872, Ellen Maria Broadhead married Theodosius Botkin, The couple settled in Mound City, Linn County, Kansas, where Theodosius practiced law, and then had three children: Ethel, Clyde Jabez, and Nell.

In 1889, Kansas' governor, Lyman Underwood Humphrey, appointed Theodosius Botkin to a district judge's post. His judicial district was in southwestern Kansas, so he relocated himself and his family to Seward County, Kansas.

From 1889 until 1892, Theodosius Botkin played a key role in Seward and Stevens Counties' county seat wars. His Find-A-Grave page provides some details of his involvement in them.

In 1892, the Botkins relocated to Hutchinson, Reno County, Kansas. Theodosius then opened a law office and became active in politics.

In 1900, the Republican Party asked Theodosius to relocate to Salt Lake City, Utah, so he could assist its candidates for public office in their political campaigns. By then, he and his wife, Ellen. had apparently separated, because she and their children remained in Hutchinson, Reno County, Kansas.

On 16 August 1913, Ellen Botkin died in a Topeka, Kansas, hospital. She was interred in the Fairlawn Cemetery, in Hutchinson.
