Vessie was a member of the Beckley Division of the National Guard. He had joined the Armed Forces and was due to leave within a month of his tragic death. Vessie had been employed by the Carolina Supermarket in Sophia.

Vessie had three siblings:

1. William Creed Brogan (1943 -)
2. Virginia Pearl Walker Lilly (1947 -)
3. Velma Lee Walker Lilly (no date -)

On Oct. 16, 1971, Vessie was a passenger in a car driven by his fiancé's twin brother when he lost control of the vehicle and hit a telephone pole injuring Vessie. He was transported to a Beckley hospital where he later died. His death occurred four years to the day that he lost his cousin, Denzell R. Mills in Vietnam. Both of these deaths totally devastated the Walker families for years to come.
