John Vass Snodgrass, Jr. died at his Sparta home, Tuesday, August 6, 2013. Dr. Snodgrass was preceded in death by Phyllis Martin Snodgrass, his loving wife for 63 years, and his parents, John Vass Snodgrass and Chlora Mason Snodgrass. He is survived by his sister, Cora D. Simpson, his aunt, Mildred Viglasky, six nieces and nephews, Mary Joyce Carlson, Donna Simpson, David Simpson, John Cameron Simpson, Lillian Stewart and James Allen Simpson, 20 grand nephews and nieces, a host of great-grand nephews and nieces, friends, colleagues, caretakers, and former patients.
John V. Snodgrass, Jr. was born in Sparta, TN on October 18, 1927. He graduated from White County High School in April of 1945. While in high school he was both a scholar and an athlete, playing football. After high school he joined the army, stationed first in Denver, Colorado and then in Okinawa, Japan. He married Phyllis Martin in June of 1949. He attended Tennessee Polytechnic Institute and graduated in 1952 with a degree in agriculture, specializing in agronomy and soil conversation. While in college he was a trainee with the Putnam County Soil Conservation District. After graduating, he worked as a soil conservation agent in Rogersville, Tennessee from 1954 until 1955, when he returned to Tennessee Polytechnic Institute and compleleted a pre-medical curriculum. He attended the University of Tennessee Medical School at Memphis, graduating in September of 1959. After medical school, Dr. Snodgrass served an internship at Nashville General Hospital from October of 1959 until October of 1960, before opening a private practice in Rockwood, Tennessee. He devoted his career to the general practice of medicine in Rockwood until December 31, 1993. While in that practice he served as Chief of Staff at Chamberlain Memorial Hospital and was on the Board of Directors at Rockwood Health Care Center. After closing his private practice, he continued to practice in nursing homes until he retired from the practice of medicine in 2006. In his profession, he was known as a caring, compassionate physician.
In his leisure time, Dr. Snodgrass and his wife, Phyllis, loved to travel and he enjoyed photography, hunting and farming. Dr. Snodgrass was a loyal University of Tennessee football fan and in the fall you would fine him at the games at Neyland Stadium. In his later years he continued to follow the Vols on television and watch his cattle on the farm outside his window. Dr. Snodgrass was a member of the Rockwood Church of Christ.
