Cora Daisy Joyce Snodgrass Simpson, a resident of Sparta, died peacefully in Nashville, Tennessee on November 3, 2015. Services are Friday, November 6, 2015, at Oak Lawn Funeral Home.
Familiarly known as Cora D., she was born May 30, 1923, to John Vass Snodgrass and Chlora Mason Snodgrass.
In 1936, she was valedictorian of her 8th grade class at East Sparta City School. In 1940, she delivered the Salutorian's graduation speech, and graduated 4th in her class at White County High School. After graduation she studied home economics for a year at Tennessee Polytechnic Institute. Cora D. left school to marry her high school sweetheart, David Luther Simpson, on September 27, 1941 in Triune, Georgia.
In 1943, they moved to Detroit, Michigan where Cora D. worked in a plant inspecting war plane parts. After moving back to White County, she worked with her father in the Circuit Court Clerk's office, before starting a family in 1946.
In May of 1955, along with their partners, they opened the White County Livestock Market. Cora D. worked as the office manager until the business sold in 1975. At the same time she parented six children.
Cora D. worked for the Warren County Livestock Market into her 70s before retiring. She took a short break from the livestock business from 1981-1983 to help her daughter, Donna Simpson, open her private law practice. During all that time she continued to help care for her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Cora D. was an active member of the Church of Christ, with membership at East Sparta, West Sparta, Taft, Bethlehem, and Findlay. She especially enjoyed teaching young people at the church. Prior to her death, she was a member of the Findlay Church of Christ and the Prime Time group at Central Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, her brother, John V. Snodgrass, Jr, and
her aunt, Mildred Viglasky.
Cora D. is survived by her six children, Mary Joyce Carlson, Donna Simpson and husband Steve Chapman, David Luther (Sandy) Simpson, Jr., John Cameron (Brenda) Simpson, Lillian Anne (William) Stewart, and James Allen (Tracy) Simpson,
20 grandchildren and 41 great grandchildren.
Grandchildren, Ethan Michael Massa, Joshua Cameron Carlson, David Mason Simpson, John Kyle Simpson, Erik Reid Stewart, & James Allen Simpson, Jr. will be pallbearers.
